The order issued by CEO Ramban with regard to suspension of a government school teacher for allegedly uploading an objectionable and community-targeted content on social media has once again made it clear that teachers are bound to act as role models for the society whether they are inside the educational institutions or not.
Reportedly, the Chief Education Office (CEO) Ramban has suspended a Grade-II teacher posted at Government Primary School, Killaseri in Batote Zone of the district with immediate effect under rule 31 of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1956.
It is pertinent to mention that educators have greater responsibility towards the society and their behaviour under no circumstances should be allowed to tend to be full of prejudice or contrary to societal norms. One can say that teachers are not just store houses of knowledge which they convey to their students rather they are supposed to showcase exemplary actions because they have the onus of shaping young minds and nurturing social harmony.
Any kind of irresponsible behaviour by this section of society would erode public trust and undermine the sanctity of the teaching profession, which is uncalled for and unacceptable. The action taken by the Chief Education Office serves as a stark reminder that those tasked with nation-building cannot afford to take undue liberties, especially ones that have the potential to inflame sensitivities or disturb communal balance.
Such cases also highlight the need for the concerned department to train the educators about their duties and limitations because a true teacher should never be biased or allowed to carry prejudice at the backend of his or her mindset against any section or faith because this could lead to creating more of such individuals who come across such entities and get influenced by the people with such contemptuous state of mind.
This episode should also prompt the education authorities to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and promote regular sensitization programmes so that teachers remain aware of the ethical expectations tied to their profession. In an era where social media can amplify even the smallest lapse, it becomes imperative that educators exercise restraint, responsibility and a deep sense of social commitment to ensure that their conduct—both online and offline—upholds the dignity of the noble profession they represent.
The order issued in this regard has further directed the aforesaid teacher that during the suspension period, he shall remain attached to the office of the Chief Education Officer, Ramban. The action taken against this teacher is a lesson for all those entities in J&K indulging in such scornful acts due to various reasons because the government has made it clear through this move that such irresponsible behaviour shall not be tolerated come what may.
