Spice Board ramps up plant inspections as quality checks on major exporters intensify

In an effort to ensure exported spices meet stringent quality and safety standards across global markets, the Spices Board of has ramped up inspections of major processing facilities. Sources indicate MDH and Everest plants across the country are currently being examined to improve compliance.

This comes after certain MDH and Everest products were redflagged in Hong Kong and Singapore early last month over detection of pesticide Ethylene Oxide (EtO) levels above permitted limits. While Hong Kong prohibited consumption citing any presence, Singapore's threshold is set at 50mg/kg compared to the stringent EU limit of 0.01-0.02 mg/kg.

Data reveals over 99.8% of India's 1.4 million tonnes of annual spice shipments satisfied import norms last fiscal. Only a minuscule 0.2% faced rejections, compared to a 0.73% failure rate for other imported foods. Notably, the European Union has seen a sharp drop in safety alerts regarding Indian exports and EtO contamination post enhanced monitoring efforts.

Experts point out various countries have different risk assessment approaches whilst standards are still evolving. Regulations also need a cost-benefit balance without unnecessary barriers to trade. The board is working closely with producers to introduce steam sterilization and tighter supply chain tracking to prevent potential issues.

India's $4.25 billion spice export industry, accounting for 12% of global trade, will be keen to ensure quality is never compromised. With stringent quality oversight and adherence to complex and diversifying global standards, the sector is bullish on taking this success story to even greater heights.
