Social Forestry Deptt becoming hub of corruption, Enquiry conducted at Guest House over Lunch

Date:

Ajay Sharma, Rajouri, July 30, 2023

It won't be perhaps wrong to say that the social forestry department, division Rajouri is allegedly becoming a hub of irregularities and malpractices, as some officers have been suspended and recovery of embezzled funds was imposed. However, despite these measures, corrupt practices appear to be thriving within the department, drawing widespread public concern and condemnation.

Sources close to the matter have revealed that the initial inquiry into the fraudulent activities failed to result in the registration of any First Information Reports (FIRs) against the allegedly corrupt officials. This has raised questions about the efficacy and integrity of the investigative process.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an officer expressed fears of retaliation and refused to disclose the names of individuals involved in corrupt practices over the phone. Nonetheless, he implicated two senior officers, highlighting the pervasiveness of the alleged corruption within the ranks.

“The new strip constructed on Devak Hatthal road has come under scrutiny, with allegations that the road is not built to standard specifications and lacks proper wiring,” said the officer, adding that the substandard quality of work raises suspicions about possible collusion between corrupt officials and contractors.

Adding to the growing concerns, it has been alleged that the inquiry committee questionably conducted its proceedings.

“Instead of conducting on-site investigations and taking reports from the ground, the committee reportedly concluded its activities within the confines of the department's guest house,” said sources, adding that the committee's lunchtime discussions with the same officials under investigation have further raised doubts about the impartiality and credibility of the investigation.

In an alarming development, the reporter who first highlighted the alleged corruption within the department has been summoned and subjected to pressure.

“The officers should be asked about their intentions of summoning a journalist who was merely fulfilling their duty to inform the public,” said a village-level public man requesting not to be named, adding that senior officers within the department are attempting to shield those involved in corrupt practices.

Locals and social activists have earnestly appealed to the Lieutenant Governor and Principal Secretary to intervene in the matter and ensure a fair and impartial investigation.

They insisted that the integrity of the enquiry must be thoroughly scrutinized, considering the circumstances surrounding its conduct in the department's guest house allegedly merely a formality.
