Shots fired during militant pursuit in Jammu Kashmir

Srinagar: Two rounds were fired in the while pursuing a suspected armed militant last night, triggering panic in Ram Munshi Bagh area near the tourist hub of Dalgate here, a police officer said today.

Cops noticed suspicious movement of a youth on a motorcycle in high security Ram Munshi Bagh area last night and signaled him to stop, the officer said.

He said the motorcyclist ignored the signal following which the policemen gave him a chase during which they fired two rounds in air. The incident created panic among tourists and residents.

As the policemen reached Durga Nag area which was teeming with tourists, they could not find the motorcyclist, the officer said.

He said senior police officials rushed to the spot.

Searches were carried out but the militant was not found.

The scene of incident is inside the highly secured zone of the city where former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah, several sitting ministers and top officials reside.

The headquarter of the Army's Chinar Corp is less than two kilometres away.

Sources in police said an internal inquiry is going on into the incident to ascertain whether the claim of the policemen on duty last night was genuine.
