Shimla, Jun 21: In a remarkable show of passion for unique vehicle numbers, Sanjeev Kumar from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, has purchased a VIP registration number—HP21C-0001—for ₹14 lakh for his new scooter, which itself is valued at only ₹1 lakh. The number was secured through an online auction conducted by the Himachal Pradesh Transport Department.
The high-stakes auction had just two participants, with the second-highest bid coming from a resident of Baddi, Solan district, at ₹13.5 lakh. Kumar outbid him to clinch the number, which now stands as possibly the most expensive registration ever issued for a two-wheeler in the state.
Officials confirmed the entire amount has been deposited into the state treasury, bringing in revenue without added expenditure. Kumar explained his motivation, stating, “There’s no price tag on passion. When you want something extraordinary, you don’t look at the cost.”
His son, Dinesh Kumar, added that the move was driven purely by personal interest. “We applied online and won the number through transparent bidding.”
The unusual purchase has stirred conversations both online and offline, with reactions ranging from astonishment to admiration. Many have lauded the transparency of the digital auction process, while others see it as a sign of changing consumer aspirations.
