SC Defers Hearing to Jan 13 on Pleas Against EC’s Special Revision of Electoral Rolls

New Delhi, Jan 8: The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred till January 13 the final hearing on a batch of petitions challenging the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in several states, including Bihar.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, which had scheduled the matter for hearing on Thursday, said the proceedings would resume on Tuesday. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for the Election Commission, is expected to continue his submissions.

Earlier, on January 6, the Election Commission told the court that it has the constitutional authority and competence to undertake the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and is duty-bound to ensure that no foreign nationals are enrolled as voters.

The petitions challenging the SIR exercise have raised significant constitutional issues relating to the scope of the Election Commission’s powers, citizenship and the right to vote, the court was told. (Agencies)
