A Rare Supermoon Blue Moon Is Lighting Up the Night Sky this Month
Stargazers are in for a celestial treat later this week as the first of four successive supermoons of 2024 rises in the night sky on Monday. What makes this full moon even more special is that it will also be a rare ‘Blue Moon'.
Per NASA's definition, a supermoon occurs when the Moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, making it appear brighter and bigger than usual. On August 19th at around midnight IST, skywatchers around the world will be able to admire this supersized, brightly glowing full moon.
Adding to the uniqueness is the fact that it's a ‘Seasonal Blue Moon' – the third full moon in a season with four full moons. Blue Moons don't actually look blue but got their name from an old phrase. The last time a Supermoon Blue Moon occurred was back in 2018.
The best time to observe this once-in-a-few-years event will be shortly after moonrise in the east. Those in North America can spot it on the 18th-20th while folks in Asia and Australia should look on the night of the 19th-20th. In India, it will be highest in the night sky from midnight onwards on the 19th.
For dazzling views of this strikingly bright mega moon, experts recommend finding an open area away from light pollution. Binoculars or a small telescope can help pick out more lunar features. Clear weather is essential so check forecasts in advance. Remember to let your eyes adapt fully to darkness for optimal sighting.
