Reasi, November 18: Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Pouni, Bark, and Lettar of Reasi district have been reportedly grappling with a severe shortage of anti-rabies vaccines for several months, leaving patients in distress and forcing them to either purchase the life-saving shots from private markets at exorbitant prices or travel long distances to places like Sunderbani or Reasi town.
Sources from the ground revealed that the vaccine has been unavailable for many days, with no immediate replenishment in sight.
“These Primary Health Centers are running out completely, and patients are suffering,” said a local health worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, adding that the medical officers at the affected PHCs have repeatedly requested replenishment from higher authorities, but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The primary responsibility for ensuring vaccine supply lies with the Director of Health Services, Jammu. Even the Health Commissioner is reportedly aware of the issue, yet no concrete action has been taken, claimed sources.
“The Lieutenant Governor must take strict action. Officials should be questioned: Why has the supply not been made? When was the requisition submitted? In case of an emergency at a PHC, where do they get the vaccine from?” demanded a shortage.
They added that the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Reasi, along with the Director of Health, must be held accountable for this public health crisis.
“Patients, many from low-income families, are being harassed – either paying inflated private rates or enduring long journeys for treatment,” said sources, adding that the popular local leaders have also remained oblivious to the crisis.
Despite multiple attempts to seek comments, no officials from the Health Department, CMO Reasi, or Director’s office were available.
