Police foil PDP protest against Waqf (Amendment) Act in Srinagar

Srinagar, April 11 – Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday prevented a protest march by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, by barricading the party headquarters and restricting protestors from leaving the premises.

Led by PDP general secretary Khurshid Alam, dozens of party workers had gathered at the party office near Sher-e-Kashmir Park to voice their opposition to the bill, which they claim was passed undemocratically. The protestors attempted to march towards the city centre but were stopped by a heavy police presence that had sealed the gates.

Carrying placards reading “We reject the Waqf Bill” and “NC’s silence is criminal,” the protestors shouted slogans demanding the repeal of the Act. The demonstration remained peaceful, and the crowd eventually dispersed without incident.

Speaking to reporters, Alam said the PDP had intended a peaceful protest but was prevented by authorities. He criticized the manner in which the bill was passed, alleging it occurred “in the dead of night,” and claimed no section of society supports it.

Alam also took aim at other political parties, accusing the National Conference (NC) of maintaining a “criminal silence” on the issue. “We condemn the role of NC on the passing of the Act,” he said, adding that the party was “befooling” the public.

The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, has sparked controversy across sections of society in Jammu and Kashmir, with several groups raising concerns over its implications for religious and community-owned property. (Agencies)
