Over 40 lakh cash, gold, silver seized in Poonch

    Poonch, Aug 20: The joint teams of police and army on Friday seized cash worth over Rs 40 lakhs, a huge quantity of gold and silver ornaments suspected to be stolen in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
    Station House Officer, Police Station Surankote, Jatinder Singh Sambyal said that in a day long operation conducted by the police along with the army, gold, silver, cash and other valuables, suspected to be a stolen property, was seized.
    “The joint teams were on routine patrolling when information was received regarding suspicious movement in three houses in Surankote town after which a search warrant was obtained from the Executive Magistrate,” said the SHO.
    He informed that during searches, huge amounts of valuables were recovered from these houses including Rs 40,72,134 cash, gold ornaments weighing 1.27-kg, silver ornaments weighing 1.04-kg, 11 wrist watches, 60 mobile phones and one camera among other valuables.
    The search was conducted in the houses of Jameela Begum, resident of Khet Mandi, at present Store Lane, Surankote, Shanaz Akhter, resident of Iqbal Colony, Surankote and Rashida Begum alias Sharifa Begum of Ari, Mendhar, at present Power House Locality, Surankote.
    Investigation into the matter has been initiated with a multi member police team headed by Dy SP Surankote, Khaliq Hussain, said the officer.
