NEW DELHI, Mar 24: The National Human Rights Commission has sought a report from Jammu and Kashmir Police over allegations of targeted killings of civilians and lack of transparency in related investigations.
Taking cognizance of a complaint, a bench headed by NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo issued a notice to the J&K Director General of Police, directing submission of an Action Taken Report within two weeks.
The complaint, filed by advocate Vineet Jindal, raised concerns over a pattern of violence against civilians, including members of vulnerable communities, and alleged gaps in investigation and prosecution.
It referred to past incidents such as the Nadimarg massacre and the Wandhama massacre, as well as attacks on Amarnath Yatra pilgrims, highlighting unresolved cases and lack of clarity on arrests and prosecutions.
The plea also cited violations of fundamental rights, including the right to life, equality and freedom of religion, and sought detailed investigation reports, status of FIRs, arrests and prosecutions, along with measures for protection, compensation and rehabilitation of victims’ families.
Acting on the complaint, the commission directed authorities to examine the allegations and submit relevant records through its HRCNet portal within the stipulated time. (Agencies)
