Indian track and field star Neeraj Chopra will commence his quest for an unprecedented second consecutive Olympic gold medal in javelin throw on Tuesday at the ongoing Paris Olympics. The iconic Stade de France in Paris will play host to the qualifying rounds as Chopra charts a new frontier in Olympic history by attempting to defend his title from the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Only four other men have managed to retain their Olympic javelin throw crown in over a century of modern Olympics. Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic was the last athlete to achieve this feat with wins in 1992, 1996 and 2000. Chopra will be hoping to join this elite club of multi-time champions on one of sport's biggest stages.
The star Indian athlete has seen limited competition this season due to a minor injury concern earlier this year. After finishing second in Doha with a throw of 88.36 meters, Chopra withdrew from an event in May as a precaution. Now fully fit, he will be raring to unleash his full potential and secure an automatic berth in the final scheduled for August 8th.
Fans back home can catch the live action of Neeraj Chopra's qualifying round on August 6th. The session is split into two groups with Chopra slated to compete in Group A starting from 1:50 PM IST. Should he progress, viewers can watch his potential title defense in the final round broadcasting at 11:55 PM IST on August 8th. Both events will be televised on Sports18 network and streamed online via JioCinema in India.
