    Bangladesh protest: Student leaders urge Nobel Laureate Yunus to lead interim govt after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster

    New Delhi, Aug 6: Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has said the current Parliament will be dissolved on Tuesday a day after Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to UK with military taking control of the country amid massive protests.

    Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus will be the chief adviser to the interim government in Bangladesh, the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced on Tuesday.

    Hasina on Monday fled the country and landed at the Hindon airbase near Ghaziabad where shw was received by Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.

    Hasina, 76, is seeking an asylum in the UK. Hasina's sister Rehana, who holds a UK citizenship, also accompanies the leader. According to the sources, no confirmation from the UK regarding political asylum for Hasina has been received so far.

    US: Transition of power in Bangladesh should be as per law

    The US has called for having a transition of power in accordance with laws in Bangladesh and sought action against those responsible for the hundreds of deaths in violence in the past for weeks. US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller said “We are monitoring the situation carefully. The United States stands with the people of Bangladesh”. “We welcome the announcement of an interim government and urge any transition be conducted with respect to democratic principles, rule of law, and the will of the Bangladeshi people”. US that provides almost $ 2 Billon in aid to Dhaka to assist the Rohingya refugees, said it would continue to work with the any new government in providing help for the refugees.

    Prof Yunus agrees to take on responsibility: Nahid Islam

    In a video posted on social media early Tuesday morning, Nahid Islam, one of the key coordinators of the movement, said that Prof Yunus has agreed to take on this crucial responsibility at the call of the student community to save the country, the Daily Star newspaper reported. “We took 24 hours to announce a framework for the interim government. However, considering the emergency situation, we are announcing it now,” Nahid said. “We have decided that the interim government would be formed in which internationally renowned Nobel Laureate Dr Mohammad Yunus, who has wide acceptability, would be the chief adviser,” said Nahid, flanked by two other coordinators.
