Motivation or Self-Motivation – What Do You Prefer?

There’s a subtle difference between being pushed and being driven; between being Motivated and being Self-Motivated. Over the years, I’ve experienced both- on the battlefield, in the sports-field and in life. And I’ve come to believe that while Motivation can spark a fire, Self-Motivation is what keeps that fire burning; even through the darkest nights and rough patches.

    Motivation – The External Push

Motivation is often delivered via an external force- it may be a coach’s command, a leader’s words, a book, a video or sometimes a quote can stimulate your internal forces. It’s that nudge that gets you started, especially when inertia weighs too heavy. I’ve felt its power many times in my life – during my recovery phase after my near-death experience, during rough patches at professional end or even when pain whispered louder than the reasons.

But trust me, Motivation is like a spark. It ignites quickly and fades just as fast if not fueled by something deeper. You can listen to a hundred motivational talks, but if the fire inside you is missing, it’s like trying to light wet wood – it’ll surely smoke for a while, but will never truly burn.In the Armed forces, Motivation is everywhere -in form of war cries, slogans, brotherhood etc. It gives everyone strength in moments when the odds were impossible. But when you’re alone, facing the night, and the pain is your only companion- that’s when you realize motivation can’t always walk with you.And that is the moment, when Self-Motivation takes over.

    Self-Motivation- The Inner Engine

Self-Motivation doesn’t need applause’s, approvals, or reminders. It’s that voice inside you which says, “Get up, even if no one’s watching you”. It’s what separates the consistent from the occasional; and the achievers from the dreamers.

When I lost my leg at the mere start of my professional career, I felt that these were the days when the world went silent. No war cries. No team around. Just me, my thoughts, and an uphill climb ahead. Motivation got me started, but it was Self-Motivation that kept me moving till date – one painful step at a time. Self-motivation is born when life strips you of all your excuses. When you stop asking “Why me?” and start saying “Just try me.”

There is a difference in both -Motivation can make you run once;Self-Motivation makes you run every day. Motivation can inspire you to lift the weight;Self-Motivation makes you return to the gym when no one else shows up. Motivation comes with emotion;Self-Motivation is built on discipline.

When you bank upon Motivation only, you’ll find yourself waiting-for the right moment, the right mentor or the right environment. But when you cultivate self-motivation, you create momentum from within. You stop waiting for the right conditions – you make them.I’ve lived this truth both as a soldier and as a para player. On days when pain screamed louder than passion, I learnt to listen to the quiet whisper of persistence. That whisper was actually nothing but Self-Motivation. It never shouted, never demanded;but just said, “Keep going.”

The Transition – From Motivation to Self-Motivation

So how do you make that shift?

    1. Start Small, Stay Consistent – The easiest way to kill motivation is to wait for the perfect conditions . Start today, however small. Self-motivation grows from small victories- a short run, a disciplined morning and a promise kept to yourself.

    2. Replace Emotions with Commitment- Motivation thrives on your feeling; self-motivation thrives on focus. Don’t rely on how you feel but you rely on what you’ve decided.

    3. Learn to Be Your Own Coach- The best kind of leadership is self-leadership. Talk to yourself the way a mentor would. Encourage, correct, and push yourself forward. Let your words become your own fuel.

    4. Remember Your Why- Every self-motivated person has a reason that’s personal and powerful. Mine was clear -I wanted to prove that the human spirit can never be amputated. Your “why” will keep you anchored when motivation fades.

    The Limitless Mindset

The difference between motivation and self-motivation is the same as of a spark and a flame.Motivation sparks the light for a moment;but it’s the self-motivation that ensures the flame sustains you through storms. The Limitless Mindset is built on this philosophy – that you are both the spark and the flame. You can seek guidance, listen to mentors, but ultimately, your journey is powered by the choices you make when no one is looking.

Do not misunderstand self-motivation as arrogance; it’s your ownership. It’s taking charge of your destiny. It’s waking up each day and reminding you – “I will not be defeated by circumstances, but I will define them.” That’s how champions are made – not in stadiums or stages, but in silence, through self-talk and combating struggles.

    Final Thoughts

So, which one do you prefer – Motivation or Self-motivation? Both have their place. Motivation starts the journey. Self-motivation finishes it.If motivation is the wind that fills your sail, self-motivation is the hand that holds the rudder steady through the storm. In my own life, I’ve realized that self-motivation is the purest form of strength within me- because no one can take it away. It’s my inner command, my invisible Armour and my silent power.
