MoD Approves ₹659 Crore Deal for Night Sights for SIG 716 Rifles

New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence on Wednesday signed a ₹659.47 crore contract with a consortium led by MKU Ltd and Medbit Technologies Pvt Ltd to procure night sights (image intensifiers) and associated accessories for the Indian Army’s 7.62×51 mm SIG 716 assault rifle, the ministry said in an official release.

The new Night Sights will allow soldiers to exploit the SIG 716’s longer effective range, enabling accurate engagement up to 500 metres under starlight conditions, and represent a significant improvement over currently fielded Passive Night Sights (PNS).

Classified as a Buy (Indian-IDDM) procurement, the deal contains over 51% indigenous content, marking a push toward Aatmanirbharata (self-reliance) in defence manufacturing. The ministry said the programme will bolster domestic defence-industry capabilities and create opportunities for MSMEs engaged in component production and supply chains.

The contract was formalised on October 15, 2025, and is expected to strengthen night-fighting capability for infantry units equipped with the SIG 716. (Agencies)
