LUCKNOW, Apr 16: A massive fire swept through a cluster of makeshift homes in Lucknow’s Vikas Nagar area on Wednesday evening, destroying over 280 shanties and leaving more than 1,000 people homeless, officials said, adding that no casualties were reported.
The blaze erupted around 5:30 pm in Sector 11 and spread rapidly through the densely packed settlement, triggering a series of explosions from over 50 LPG cylinders and sending thick plumes of smoke visible from kilometres away.
Nearly 20 fire tenders battled the flames for close to three hours before bringing the situation under control. Teams from the fire department, police, district administration, and NDRF and SDRF were deployed, while around 20 nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution. Two double-storey buildings in the vicinity were completely destroyed.
Chief Fire Officer Ankush Mittal said the first emergency call was received at 5:47 pm, after which firefighting units were rushed in phases as the intensity of the fire escalated.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to ensure immediate rescue and relief measures, including food, shelter, medical aid and essential supplies for the affected families. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also visited the site to review response efforts.
Preliminary investigation suggests a possible short circuit may have triggered the fire, which intensified after coming into contact with gas cylinders stored in close proximity.
The incident caused heavy traffic congestion across several parts of the city, including Samta Mulak crossing, Kukrail bridge, Polytechnic crossing, Munshipuliya and Engineering College areas. Brief tension also flared after some residents alleged foul play, but police intervened and restored order.
Most of the affected families are migrant workers from districts such as Sitapur and Barabanki and states including Assam, working as drivers, domestic helps, electricians and gig workers.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as flames engulfed homes within minutes. Several residents said they lost all belongings, including savings meant for important family events, while many escaped with only their lives.
The fire also left around 50 animals injured, including cows, goats and buffaloes.
District Magistrate Vishakh G said the fire has largely been contained and efforts are now focused on rehabilitation, with families being shifted to temporary shelters as authorities begin relief operations. (Agencies)
