“Mass Protests Continue Against Tesla Factory Expansion in Germany”
Nearly 800 environmental activists took to the streets on Friday in Gruenheide, Germany to voice their strong opposition to Elon Musk’s plans to expand the Tesla Gigafactory located there. The demonstration marks the latest chapter in the ongoing saga surrounding the electric vehicle plant, which has faced significant local resistance since its construction first began.
Led by the organizing group “Disrupt”, the protest aimed to draw attention to the demonstrators’ multifaceted concerns regarding the expansion project. These include allegations that the initial factory was unlawfully built without proper permits and the ecological damage caused by lithium mining processes that supply the batteries for Tesla cars. According to reports, over 60% of residents recently polled also voted against approving the additional 50 hectares of land slated for development.
As protesters attempted to approach the fenced-in factory site, confrontations with the large police presence turned chaotic at times. Videos from the scene show officers deploying pepper spray on the crowding activists. Musk confirmed on Twitter that factory security remained intact, while questioning the apparent leniency shown to “left-wing protestors”. Dozens were ultimately detained by police to quell any further disruptions for the day.
For now, it seems the fiery dispute shows no signs of concluding. With Tesla pushing full steam ahead on its growth ambitions and environmentalists vowing to protect local lands andcurb mining impacts, only time will tell if either sides’ position will yield under mounting pressure.
