NEW DELHI, Jan 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the Election Commission (EC) for its efforts in modernizing the election process and utilizing technology to empower the people. His comments, made during his monthly Mann ki Baat address, came ahead of the EC’s foundation day on January 25, which is also observed as National Voters’ Day.
Modi emphasized that the Election Commission has consistently worked to ensure a fair polling process and strengthen democracy. He encouraged citizens to participate actively in elections, underscoring the role of technology in enhancing the democratic process. His remarks also seemed to address ongoing concerns raised by opposition parties regarding the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The Prime Minister reflected on the early skepticism regarding India’s democracy after independence, asserting that the country had proven its critics wrong and that India is the “mother of democracy.”
In his address, Modi also played audio clips of members of India’s constituent assembly, including Rajendra Prasad, Bhim Rao Ambedkar, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee, highlighting their contributions and the values they promoted. He encouraged people to draw inspiration from these leaders to build a stronger India.
Modi also touched upon the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, noting the unity and inclusiveness visible at the event. He pointed out the strong participation of youth and said the event’s global significance is a source of pride for every Indian.
