Political clout is in full swing as various factions attempt to install their favored candidate as the Block Medical Officer (BMO) of Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Sunderbani.
The current BMO is on the verge of retirement, creating a vacancy that has sparked intense lobbying.
According to reliable sources, the outgoing BMO is reportedly trying to ensure that his successor will be someone who aligns with the interests of local political leaders. “These leaders are keen to see a local medical officer take the post, believing this individual will act in their favor,” said sources.
A senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that they have been approached by a local medical officer expressing interest in the BMO position. This development has raised concerns among the local population and within the hospital staff.
Residents of Sunderbani have voiced their disapproval, fearing that appointing a local BMO might exacerbate the hospital’s existing issues.
They argued that local officers and doctors are pushing for this appointment to benefit personally, rather than to serve the hospital’s needs.
“The hospital’s condition could deteriorate further if the post is handed to someone who prioritizes political agendas over medical responsibilities,” said one local resident.
There is a growing apprehension that the position of BMO, seen as a lucrative and influential post, is being treated as a political pawn. The stakeholders involved appear to be prioritizing their interests over the well-being of the hospital and its patients.
Residents appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to ensure a doctor of integrity from outside the region may join the hospital as BMO, which shall be in the interest of all, including hospital.
