Mammootty weighs in on reasons for success of Malayalam cinema and struggles of other Indian film industries

Mammootty weighs in on Mollywood’s winning streak and struggles faced by other film industries

Celebrated Malayalam superstar Mammootty, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming action comedy ‘Turbo’, believes that the success enjoyed by the Malayalam film industry can be attributed to discerning audiences who support good cinema. Speaking to the media while promoting ‘Turbo’ in Dubai, the veteran actor stated that the taste and preferences of viewers play a key role in determining the content and quality of movies.

He remarked that consistent patronage for well-made films sends a strong message to filmmakers and forces them to elevate their craft. In contrast, indifference shown by audiences towards subpar movies compels the industry to evolve. Mammootty noted that currently, Mollywood is flourishing because Malayali viewers appreciate and encourage qualitative films by watching them.

In comparison, other language film industries like Hindi, Tamil and Telugu seem to be struggling according to him. The megastar opined that the probable reason could be these industries’ inability to align themselves to shifting audience preferences.

Mammootty emphasized that the viewers have complete control over cinema and it can progress only if they express their likes and dislikes transparently. His comments come at a time when Malayalam cinema is delivering one critical and commercial hit after another, captivating audiences nationwide with unique, impactful stories.

‘Turbo’ is an action comedy written by Midhun Manuel Thomas and directed by Vysakh. Along with Mammootty, the star cast includes acclaimed actors like Raj B. Shetty, Sunil, Anjana Jayaprakash and Kabir Duhan Singh. The movie is expected to release in theaters on May 23.
