Jammu, Marc 12: To give fillip to mountaineering activities in the Union Territory, Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) shall organise an ambitious mountaineering expedition to multiple peaks in Ladakh in the coming climbing season.
It was decided in the Annual General Body Meeting of the Association which was chaired by MAJK president, Zorawar Singh Jamwal. To be led by one of the 11 Everesters of Jammu, the 15-member team of budding climbers of the Association may include another Everester and at least five girls, a handout issued here today informed.
The Association has planned to train the team, comprising mostly of fresh mountaineers, for at least a month before launch of the prestigious expedition in which the Association hopes to scale at least three peaks including Dzo Jongo (20500ft), Mentok-1, Mentok-II and Mentok-III all standing at a height of over 20000ft besides Kang Yatse (20500ft) which the four member team of the Association had narrowly missed last year.
Besides the decision to organise a major mountaineering expedition, election to the posts of vice president (Kashmir) and joint secretary (Kashmir) which had fallen vacant due to resignation of the concerned office bearers.
The positions were filled with Khurshid Ahmad Laigroo of Glacier Trekking and Mountaineering Club, Anantnag and Syed Abdul Mohsin of Sunridges Trekking and Mountaineering Club, Pulwama as vice president and joint secretary unanimously.
Later, Zorawar Singh Jamwal impressed upon the clubs to complete their calendar of activities before the close of the financial year besides organising some sport climbing competitions for school students.
