‘AI has the power to create equal opportunities for all’ says Google CEO
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai believes that artificial intelligence has tremendous potential to level the playing field and provide equal opportunities to most people. In a discussion with international journalists at Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, Pichai highlighted AI’s ability to give widespread access to services that are currently out of reach for many due to financial constraints.
Pichai drew parallels between AI’s impact and that of the internet. “Just as the internet reached everyone regardless of their geographical location or background, AI too can ensure knowledge and services are available to all,” he said. The Google CEO himself was inspired by the internet’s capacity to provide equal access to information from anywhere in the world.
Some of the areas where AI can create more inclusive opportunities according to Pichai include personalized education through smart tutoring systems and affordable healthcare through virtual consultations with AI assistants. Currently only a small percentage can afford one-on-one tutoring or frequent doctor visits but AI has the power to democratize these services.
The discussion comes at a time when regulators and civil groups are examining how to develop governance rules for AI progress while protecting public interests. At its recent I/O event, Google revealed plans to integrate AI into core products like Search and Gmail using newly developed language models, as it transitions into an “AI-first” approach.
Google and other industry leaders are working to deploy the most advanced AI systems for the benefit of billions. “Our goal is to apply technology at scale to make a difference in people’s lives,” said Pichai. Whether this vision of AI being accessible to all is realized will depend on addressing issues of bias, privacy and security, but Google remains committed to its mission of organizing the world’s information and making it universally available through technology.
