Low-Cost European Carrier Plans India Connections With Attractive Fares
Budget airline Wizz Air has unveiled plans to launch passenger services connecting major cities in India and Europe. The ultra-low-cost carrier is currently in discussions with relevant authorities to receive necessary regulatory approvals for operating flights to the lucrative Indian market.
According to the CEO of Wizz Air, Jozsef Varadi, the airline aims to offer highly affordable fares that would provide relief to the large Indian diaspora in Europe who often find flying home expensive. Once operations commence, the average one-way ticket price is expected to be around 200 Euros. However, promotional introductory fares could go below the 100 Euros mark.
A key factor enabling Wizz Air’s India venture is the additional Airbus A321XLR aircraft joining its fleet from early next year. These long-range narrow-body planes will allow non-stop flights of up to 8-8.5 hours, allowing the airline to tap into the major traffic flows between the two regions.
Wizz Air hopes to connect major Indian metropoles with six to seven European airports from its bases. Along with serving routes from countries where it holds designated carrier status like Italy, Austria and Hungary, the airline also aims to fly from its Abu Dhabi hub.
Operating a tightly streamlined low-cost model, Wizz Air believes it can leverage India’s price-sensitive passenger market without impacting existing operators. Once given regulatory approvals, services are planned to commence during the airline’s next financial year.
Budding partnership between India and Wizz Air could herald cheaper and greater travel options for thousands seeking affordable flights between the two regions. Only time will tell if budget-conscious flyers opt for carrier in large numbers.
