Messi’s competitive fire still burns strong, even at home
The legendary Argentine footballer Lionel Messi revealed in a recent interview that despite being at the peak of his illustrious career, winning multiple titles with both club and country, he still finds it difficult to tone down his competitive nature – even with his own children.
Messi, who turns 37 next month, has cemented his place as one of the greatest players of all time following a trophy-laden career with Barcelona and Argentina. However, speaking to Clank, the Paris Saint-Germain star admitted that competitiveness remains “a gift” that has driven his success.
“It’s very hard for me to switch off that competitive fire, it’s just something I was born with. I still have trouble letting my kids win whenever we play together at home,” said Messi.
The prolific forward is currently leading Argentina’s charge at the 2024 Copa America, where he will look to add to his tally of over 730 career goals. Messi revealed winning the previous edition of the Copa America as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup with his national team has reinvigorated his love for the beautiful game.
“After fulfilling my dream of winning trophies with Argentina, I’m enjoying my football again like I was as a three-year old. I know my time left is limited so I want to make the most of every moment,” he stated.
While the statistical analysis of player performance has become increasingly prevalent, Messi shared he pays little attention to such metrics. The iconic number 10 values focusing solely on helping his team succeed above all else.
