Landlords’ responsibility doesn’t end with rent!

It is intriguing that still there are people in Jammu and Kashmir, who are taking things lightly as far as their role in making security robust is concerned. In this context, reportedly the police have registered an FIR against a house owner in the Bishnah area for failing to conduct mandatory police verification of his tenants.

Strangely, the resident of Chak Muraar in Tehsil Bishnah had rented out his house to multiple tenants without following the verification process. However, police have again appealed to the people who have rented out their prosperities to follow tenant verification guidelines issued by their District Magistrates as non-compliance will lead to strict legal action. It is pertinent to mention that various district administrations including Deputy Commissioner Jammu had directed the landlords falling in their jurisdictions to submit the details of their tenants and domestic help to the concerned police stations following which several stakeholders have followed the directions but still there is a big lot of people who have shown reluctance in following the instructions, like this case in Bishnah area.
This is a dangerous trend because in one such case in the past, one sub inspector of JKP faced legal action for not disclosing the required information to the nearest police station as his tenant hailing from Reasi District was allegedly involved in a terror strike in Jammu’s Narwal area. One could infer from this case that by not disclosing the aforesaid information to the administration can be dangerous looking at the critical security scenario in J&K as terrorists might be living in some residential areas under the guise of innocent people, which only police can verify because it has the required resources.
It is good that cops of JKP have started tenant verification drives in various areas and it is imperative not to take such directions complacently because this could have serious repercussions as far as the security is concerned. Still there is a time that people should ponder over the issue and those who have not initiated the tenant verification process should start it without wasting any more time as it is of the utmost importance
