Today, June 6, 2025, India will witness history in motion as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flags off the first-ever rail service connecting the Kashmir Valley directly to the rest of the country. This moment marks the fulfilment of a decades-long dream of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the realisation of one of the most challenging infrastructure ventures in independent India – the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL).
Stretching 272 kilometres through some of the world’s most treacherous and rugged Himalayan terrain, the USBRL is more than a railway line – it is a symbol of resilience, unity, and development. Built at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, the project stands as a testament to modern engineering marvels and national commitment to equitable growth. For years, the vision of a train whistling through Kashmir’s lush valleys remained a distant dream. Today, that dream has turned into reality.
This landmark project is not just about improved connectivity; it is about integration – emotional, economic, and cultural. The inclusion of Kashmir in the Indian Rail network will bring unprecedented opportunities to the region. From easier access to markets and better mobility for students and professionals, to the opening up of tourism in an unprecedented way, the benefits are manifold. The rail link will significantly cut travel time, ensure safer transit through mountainous regions, and help bridge the psychological and physical distances that have historically existed.
A key highlight of the USBRL is the Chenab Rail Bridge – the world’s highest railway arch bridge – a feat that has captured global attention. Spanning 1,315 metres and standing 359 metres above the riverbed, this structure is not only an architectural marvel but also a beacon of India’s engineering excellence.
The Kashmir rail connectivity would not only boost tourism and trade but also create new avenues for employment, enhance access to healthcare and education, and uplift local industries by integrating them with larger national markets. Improved logistics will facilitate the movement of goods, reduce costs for farmers and artisans, and open up investment opportunities in sectors like horticulture, handicrafts, and food processing. It will also strengthen disaster response and emergency services in the remote areas of the Valley, ensuring faster and more efficient aid during critical times.
Prime Minister Modi’s government deserves recognition for its unwavering commitment to the timely completion of this transformative project. It is under his leadership that long-pending aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir have seen light. The inauguration of this rail service will go down in history as a defining moment of New India’s promise to leave no region behind.
As the first train rolls down from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and beyond, it will carry more than passengers — it will carry hopes, dreams, and the spirit of a united India. This is not merely a railway project; it is the beginning of a new journey for Kashmir — on tracks of peace, prosperity, and progress.
