Kangana Ranaut faces backlash on social media over alleged double standards
A months-old social media post by actor Kangana Ranaut showing support for actor Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars ceremony earlier this year has resurfaced online. This comes after Ranaut herself was recently involved in a physical altercation at an airport.
At the 2022 Academy Awards, Smith had slapped Rock on-stage after the latter made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Ranaut had then taken to her Instagram account stating that she would have reacted the same way if someone mocked her family publicly. However, in a recent incident, Ranaut was allegedly slapped by a security official at an airport in Chandigarh after the actress reportedly made insensitive remarks about protestors, including the official’s mother.
Following this, netizens on popular platforms like Reddit and once popular microblogging site dug up Ranaut’s past post condoning Smith’s actions. They expressed how her take now seems contradictory, given that she is criticizing those defending the official who reportedly laid hands on her. One user commented about Ranaut’s “perceived double standards” while another remarked how her old post “shows her hypocrisy”. Others joined in echoing similar views about her being a victim of her own words.
It is reported that the altercation with the official stemmed from comments Ranaut made previously about women protestors, including disparaging remarks about the mothers of protestors. An FIR has been filed against the official.
