Jammu, Jun 27: Security forces have launched an intensified search operation to track down three Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists hiding in the forested Basantgarh area of Udhampur district, officials confirmed on Friday.
The operation, backed by drones, sniffer dogs, and additional reinforcements, resumed Friday morning following an encounter on Thursday in which one JeM terrorist, identified as Haider alias Maulvi from Pakistan, was killed.
The group of four had been under surveillance for over a year and was confronted by a joint Army and police team in the remote Bihali area. The terrorists were found hiding near Karoor Nallah and were engaged by Army Para Commandos.
Officials revealed the group had been using forest terrain and natural caves to evade capture, aided by local over ground workers (OGWs). Five OGWs have been arrested in recent months for supporting the militants with food and shelter. A local terrorist who returned from Pakistan is also suspected to be assisting the group.
Basantgarh lies on a known infiltration route from Pakistan, and has seen multiple encounters in the past year. These include fatal incidents involving Army personnel, CRPF, police posts, and village defence guards.
The ongoing operation aims to neutralize the remaining terrorists and prevent further movement into the Kashmir Valley. (Agencies)
