J&K: FIR registered against Facebook Page Administrator for spreading misinformation

Srinagar, Oct 6: Police in Budgam district have registered a case against the administrator of a Facebook page titled “Kashmir Speaks” for allegedly circulating false and misleading information about an incident involving the death of a horse.

According to officials, on August 26, Police Station Khansahib Budgam had filed FIR No. 165/2025 under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after a horse died in the village Rakhai, which was later found to be linked to a personal dispute.

However, on October 5, the Facebook page “Kashmir Speaks” reportedly claimed that the horse was killed for its meat to be sold in the Arizal market, a claim police termed false and misleading, saying it created unnecessary panic among locals.

In response, authorities registered a fresh case — FIR No. 187/2025 under Section 353(2) BNS — and initiated an investigation.

Budgam Police urged the public to avoid spreading unverified or fabricated content on social media that could disturb public order and tranquility.
“Strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in such activities,” police warned in a statement. (Agencies)
