Jammu to Chandigarh Vande Bharat Express a lifeline in waiting

A fast, direct rail link like Vande Bharat Express can connect education, healthcare, business and tourism between the two cities. At present it takes 8 to 10 hours to travel from Jammu to Chandigarh by road. The journey once scenic, has now become a test of endurance, especially after the recent floods that left large stretches of the highway in poor condition. For critical patients being rushed to Chandigarh in ambulances, the experience is nothing short of nightmare.

In recent months, the Vande Bharat Express has become a symbol of modern connectivity in northern India. With high-speed trains already linking Jammu to Srinagar and Jammu to Amritsar, its now high time that the route extends to Chandigarh, a connection that would serve as both a social and economic lifeline for thousands of people who travel daily between the two cities.

A Vande Bharat Express between Jammu and Chandigarh will not only cut travel time by nearly half, but also provide a comfortable and reliable mode of transport for students, patients, professionals and tourists alike. A morning service from Jammu to Chandigarh and a return train in the evening could resolve many of the pressing connectivity issues faced by Jammuites today.

    A Corridor of Opportunity

The success of Vande Bharat trains across India and particularly the recent Jmmu-Srinagar route has proven that modern rail connectivity can be a genuine agent of progress, The next logical step is a Jammu- Chandigarh Vande Bharat Express connecting the winter capital of the Union Territory with one of North India’s most important urban and institutional hubs.

Students on the Move: The Academic Connection

Every year, hundreds of students from Jammu & Kashmir move to Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula to pursue higher education at prestigious institutions such as Punjab University, Chandigahrh University and PEC. For many families, regular travel between Jammu and Chandigarh have become routine. A Vande Bharat service would make these journeys faster, safer and more affordable, reducing dependency on long, uncomfortable road trips and ill timed weekly train.

    Healthcare: A Vital Necessity

Perhaps the strongest case for a Jammu-Chandigarh Vande Bharat comes from the healthcare sector. The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research(PGIMER) in Chandigarh is one India’s most respected medical institutions, treating patients from across northern India. Add to that world class private hospitals such as Fortis, Max and Ivy and the picture becomes clear. Every single day, patients from Jammu travel hundreds of kilometers for advanced treatment. For families accompanying patients, the current long road journey is not only uncomfortable but often traumatic. A swift and comfortable train option could literally become a lifeline for such families, ensuring timely access to critical care.

    Tourism and Connectivity

Chandigarh is the gateway to Himachal Pradesh’s popular hill stations like Kasauli, Solan, Shimla and Chail, which attract thousands of Jammuites every summer. Conversely, traveller’s from Chandigarh and Himachal visit Jammu and Katra for religious tourism, particularly to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. A direct Vande Bharat would strengthen this two-way tourism flow, benefiting hotels, restaurants, transport services and small businesses on both sides.

    Business, Defence and Governance

Jammu and Chandigarh share deep administrative, defence and commercial ties. Many government departments and defence establishments have regular interactions between the two regions, Business communities too have long demanded better connectivity to move goods and meet clients. A Vande Bharat on this route would cater to officers, traders and professionals alike promoting efficiency and productivity. With travel time reduced to around four hours, it would finally make same day travel between the two cities a reality.

    A Call for Action

The people of Jammu have witnessed remarkable progress in recent years from improved road networks to the long awaited Jammu-Srinagar rail link and other infrastructure milestones. Yet, the Jammu-Chandigarh Vande Bharat remains a missing link in this chain of development. Its time to bridge it.

I humbly appeal to our respected Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Ji, who has consistently championed the aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir, to take up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji. Under his visionary leadership, India’s transport landscape has been transformed.

A Jammu- Chandigarh Vande Bharat would be yet another proud gift from the Prime Minister to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, one that truly touches lives every single day.
