Instagram Teen Accounts Now Restricted to PG-13, Parents Gain More Control

New Delhi: Meta announced that teenagers using Instagram will now see only PG-13 content by default, and they cannot modify these settings without parental approval, marking a major step in protecting young users from harmful material.

Under the updated rules, teen-specific accounts will display photos and videos similar to a PG-13 movie rating, excluding content that depicts sex, drugs, dangerous stunts, or other potentially harmful material. In a blog post, Meta explained that posts featuring strong language, risky stunts, or items like marijuana paraphernalia will either be hidden or not recommended to teens. The company called this update the most significant change since introducing teen accounts last year.

All users under 18 are automatically placed into restrictive teen accounts unless a parent or guardian allows them to opt out. These accounts are private by default, limit daily usage, and already filter sensitive content such as posts promoting cosmetic procedures. Meta is also introducing a stricter “limited content” setting for parents who want additional control over what teens can view.

The changes come amid growing criticism of Instagram for exposing teens to harmful or age-inappropriate content. While Meta had previously promised to block posts related to self-harm, suicide, or eating disorders, investigations revealed that teen accounts were still being recommended content involving sexual material, self-harm promotion, and posts fostering negative body image.

The new safeguards prevent teens from following accounts that consistently share inappropriate content or contain unsuitable usernames, bios, or links to platforms such as OnlyFans. Accounts deemed inappropriate will also be blocked from interacting with teen users through comments, messages, or follows.

Meta is expanding search term restrictions to include additional sensitive topics beyond suicide and eating disorders, covering terms like “alcohol” and “gore,” even when intentionally misspelled. Furthermore, PG-13 content guidelines will now extend to AI chat interactions for teens, preventing responses that are age-inappropriate.

The “limited content” option enables parents to further restrict both content visibility and engagement, giving families greater control over what teens see and how they interact with others on the platform. Meta emphasized that these steps are part of a broader effort to ensure teen safety, healthy engagement, and age-appropriate social media experiences. (Agencies)
