Despite widespread public outcry over water scarcity, especially during the summer season, the alleged illegal sale of government water continues unabated in the Pouni area of Reasi district.

According to sources, some influential persons in the area are allegedly involved in the illegal sale of government water meant for public use during the peak summer season, when many households are already facing an acute shortage of drinking water.

“Several villages falling under Tehsil Pouni are witnessing severe water scarcity,” sources said, adding that locals have repeatedly complained that the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department has failed to ensure a regular water supply to households.

They said that amid the crisis, some persons have allegedly installed a high-capacity pump near a government water source and are reportedly filling private water tankers in exchange for money.

“Tanker operators are being charged between Rs 200 and Rs 1,500 depending on the size of the tanker,” sources alleged, adding that the illegal activity is reportedly taking place near Bambla, around 50 metres from a Shiv Mandir on the roadside under Tehsil Pouni.

Sources claimed that the practice has continued for the past several years without any action from the authorities.

“Private tanker operators are being asked to make payments either in cash or through online transactions,” sources said, adding that they possess recordings and transaction proofs related to the payments.

Meanwhile, following complaints by residents, this reporter also inquired into the issue and gathered photographs, visuals and other evidence regarding the alleged illegal extraction and sale of water from the government source.

“Large tankers carrying nearly 10,000 litres of water are being filled regularly, while smaller tractor-mounted tankers are also being charged for water,” sources said, adding that lakhs of rupees may have reportedly been earned through the alleged illegal business over the last three to four years.

When contacted, officials of the PHE Department assured that appropriate action would be taken if any illegality is established during an inquiry.

“This is an offence under the law and attracts registration of an FIR,” PHE officials said.

However, residents have demanded a thorough investigation by the district administration, the Anti-Corruption Bureau and senior PHE authorities.

They urged the administration to immediately stop the alleged misuse of government water resources and take strict action against those involved.
