New Delhi: The Delhi Legislative Assembly received a bomb threat email on Tuesday warning of explosions at the Assembly building and Delhi Metro’s Vidhan Sabha station, hours before Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was scheduled to present the Budget.
The threat email also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
According to reports, the office of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta confirmed receipt of the emails. Police sources said the first message was received at 7.28 am, followed by another at 7.49 am, both referencing a Khalistani referendum.
Security agencies conducted a thorough search of the Assembly complex and the Vidhan Sabha Metro station. A sniffer dog squad was deployed, but no explosives were found.
Additional police personnel were deployed across the area, and investigations are underway to trace the source of the emails and assess the threat.
Despite the scare, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reached the Assembly with her cabinet to present the Budget.
Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht said the session would continue, asserting that security had been tightened. BJP MLA Anil Goyal termed the threat a hoax, while MLA Harish Khurana said development work would not be affected.
The incident came a day after the Chief Minister presented Delhi’s Economic Survey amid protests by Aam Aadmi Party MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Atishi, who later boycotted the Assembly proceedings. (Agencies)
