Himachal Pradesh witnessed heavy downpours over the past few days, resulting in closure of over a hundred roads and damage to a key highway connecting Chandigarh to Manali. According to official reports, as many as 115 roads across Mandi, Chamba, Solan and Kangra districts have been shut for vehicular movement owing to rainfall. This includes 107 roads blocked in Mandi alone.
The state emergency response centre also reported disruption of power supply in 212 locations across Himachal, with transformers inundated or disrupted by the rains. In a worrying development, a stretch of the four-lane highway linking Chandigarh and Manali started developing cracks and sinking near Pandoh town in Mandi district. Traffic has been restricted to a single lane on this section for now to ensure safety of commuters. Locals have highlighted concerns over the quality of a retaining wall constructed recently on this patch.
The weather bureau has sounded an orange alert for Himachal, predicting heavy to very heavy showers in several regions till July 8. Warnings of strong winds, hailstorms and thunderstorms have also been issued. In view of the risks, authorities and locals have been advised to remain vigilant about potential damages like landslides. The meteorological office shared that Sundernagar received over 110 mm rainfall in a single day, among the highest in the state. Other areas like Palampur, Shimla, Gohar, Solan and Mashobra also witnessed heavy downpours.
While the rains brought welcome relief after a hot summer, the disruptions highlight the need for strengthening infrastructure to better withstand such weather extremities going forward. Timely repairs of roads and improved disaster preparedness will be crucial to minimize difficulties for residents during ongoing monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh.
