Google has announced that it is discontinuing production of its Chromecast streaming device, which helped popularize streaming content to televisions when it launched in 2013. In its place, the tech giant is introducing a new TV streaming product called TV Streamer.
The new wedge-shaped TV Streamer aims to improve on the Chromecast experience with more powerful hardware and additional functionalities. It allows users to browse and stream content in 4K resolution from over 700,000 movies and shows via popular apps like YouTube, Netflix and Apple TV.
What's more, the Google TV-powered device leverages AI to provide personalized content recommendations based on viewing preferences. Users can create customized watch lists for each member of their household as well.
For enhanced discovery of content, the TV Streamer supports Gemini integrations. This allows streamlined access to summaries, reviews and season breakdowns of shows and movies directly on the device.
In addition to superior media streaming, the TV Streamer can be used as a smart home hub to control Google Home and Matter compatible devices via onboard Google Assistant. The new remote control also facilitates quick access to apps and smart home controls.
Under the hood, the TV Streamer offers faster processing thanks to its increased RAM and storage over Chromecast. Connectivity aspects have also received upgrades like an Ethernet port for wired network access.
Google has highlighted that it will continue providing software support to existing Chromecast owners. The TV Streamer aims to deliver an improved streaming experience and integrates seamlessly with other Google services for smart home and entertainment needs. It arrives on September 24 with a competitive price point of around $99.
