GDC Jourian holds Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign under NMA

Jourian: Government Degree College (GDC) Jourian organized a comprehensive Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign under the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan J&K, aimed at educating students on the severe physical, mental, and social consequences of substance abuse.

The event began with a welcome address by Prof. Archana Sharma, who stressed the importance of youth participation in eradicating drug abuse. The campaign was held under the supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Anuradha Pandoh, Principal of the college, who voiced concern over the alarming rise in drug addiction among the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The youth are the future of our nation, and substance abuse is a silent epidemic crippling their potential. Through initiatives like Nasha Mukt Abhiyan, we aim to empower students with knowledge and resilience to stay away from drugs,” she said.

Six eminent speakers, including a medical expert, a police official, and representatives from the Social Welfare and School Education departments, shared insights on the dangers of drugs, legal consequences, and rehabilitation avenues.

Dr. Tripta, Medical Officer from the Health Department, detailed the health risks, explaining how substance abuse damages vital organs, alters brain chemistry, and triggers long-term mental health disorders like depression and anxiety.

SI Sanjeet Singh spoke on the legal repercussions, citing strict penalties under the NDPS Act. “Drug involvement can lead to imprisonment, fines, and a criminal record that destroys future opportunities,” he cautioned.

Teachers Ajay Kumar (High School Pangiari) and Shikha Singh (Govt Girls High School Jourian) discussed mental health and peer pressure, highlighting how stress and social influence push youth toward drugs. They advocated healthy coping mechanisms such as sports, arts, and counseling.

Social workers Jyoti Devi and Kiran Bala emphasized the societal impact of drug abuse, stressing that it is a social problem rather than an individual one.

The programme, conducted by Prof. Archana Sharma, saw active participation from NSS volunteers and college students, reflecting the youth’s commitment to this national cause. Dr. Suresh Sharma from the Department of Dogri presented the vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of all stakeholders.

Faculty members including Prof. Neeraj Verma, Dr. Sheetal Sharma, Mr. Sanjeev Sharma, Mr. Rakshit Sharma, and Ms. Rumma Salgotra were present. The event concluded with a pledge ceremony, where participants vowed to stay drug-free and spread awareness in their communities.
