New Delhi, Jan 7: Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR and detained several individuals following violence that broke out during an anti-encroachment drive near the Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque in the Ramlila Maidan area, officials said, as investigators examine whether the clashes were orchestrated.
At least five police personnel were injured when a group allegedly pelted stones and glass bottles at the force during a court-mandated demolition being carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on land adjoining the mosque and a nearby graveyard. Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
Officials said efforts are underway to identify those involved in the violence, while investigators are probing whether the incident was spontaneous or a pre-planned attempt to disrupt the demolition drive. Senior officers said CCTV footage and videos circulating on social media are being analysed, and statements of witnesses and detained persons are being recorded.
Meanwhile, the MCD clarified that the Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque was not damaged during the operation and said the demolition was conducted in compliance with directions of the Delhi High Court. As part of the drive, around 30 bulldozers and 50 dumpers were deployed, with over 300 MCD workers and officials engaged in clearing encroachments and removing debris through the night.
The demolition resulted in the clearance of a large encroached area, including structures declared illegal by the court. Police said law and order arrangements remain in place as a precautionary measure. “The situation is under control and normalcy has been restored,” a senior officer said, adding that strict legal action will be taken against those involved. Further investigation is underway. (Agencies)
