In a close clash between commercial entertainers, Fahadh Faasil's gangster drama “Aavesham” has emerged as the top choice of moviegoers in Kerala. The Jithu Madhavan directorial collected over Rs. 12 crore in its opening weekend, riding on the massive popularity of its lead star.
In comparison, Vineeth Sreenivasan's “Varshangalkku Shesham”, featuring his son Dhyan Sreenivasan and Mohanlal's son Pranav Mohanlal in key roles, trailed behind with a statewide weekend haul of Rs. 10 crore.
Both films aimed to capitalize on the Eid-Vishu holiday season and catered to different audience segments. While “Aavesham” engaged viewers with its fast-paced action sequences and thriller plotlines, “Varshangalkku Shesham” banked on a family entertainment format.
However, fans seemed to prefer Fahadh Faasil's gritty on-screenavatar and his character's cat-and-mouse chase over the lighthearted cousin camaraderie portrayed in the other film.
Trade analysts note that “Aavesham” has found more takers across international markets as well, raking in a worldwide gross of $4.25 million compared to $3.65 million for “Varshangalkku Shesham”.
With solid word-of-mouth and repeat watch potential, Fahadh Faasil's crime caper is poised for a long run at the Kerala box office. Its edge over the other big ticket release highlights the enduring star power of natural performers.
