Social media users were left surprised after photos they had previously deleted from their iPhones started reappearing following the rollout of iOS 17.5. According to posts on forums like Reddit and X, the latest iOS update brought back images that owners thought were permanently erased dating back to years ago.
While the iOS 17.5 update primarily introduced new wallpapers and a word game, it seems to have triggered a strange bug causing long-forgotten photos to mysteriously resurface. Users reporting finding as many as 300 deleted photos reappearing in their photo libraries. One Redditor even stated seeing sensitive photos deleted in 2021 redownload themselves.
It’s important to note that when photos are removed from an iPhone, Apple only temporarily removes access and stores them for 30 days in case the user wants to restore them. However, they are supposed to be permanently deleted after a month. The fact that pictures from 2016 and beyond have resurfaced hints at a potential bug in the iOS update overwriting Apple’s normal deletion process.
Experts believe this is because data on devices is rarely ever truly removed and deleted files can sometimes still be recovered. It seems the iOS 17.5 may have triggered some kind of glitch that caused previously deleted photo data to resurface. Although concerning for users’ privacy, it serves as an important reminder of the fallibility of the “delete” function.
As the issue has yet to be acknowledged by Apple, anyone who hasn’t updated yet may want to hold off until a patch is released. A swift software fix is expected to address the problem and ensure photos people assumed were permanently removed stay gone for good. Until then, iPhone owners are left puzzled over photos from the past reemerging unexpectedly after installing the latest iOS update.
