Cyber impersonator calls to JKHCBA members, Justice Tashi chairs meeting

Date:

Tawi, April 15: A crucial meeting was convened today on the behest of J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu to address the pressing issue of fraudulent calls made to various lawyers by impersonator claiming as Superintendent of District Jail Jammu.

On the request of JKHCA, the meeting was convened by Hon'ble Justice Tashi Rabstan and attended by Sunil Gupta, DIG Jammu; SP Cyber Security Cell, Kameshwar Puri; Superintendents Jail Amphala and Kot Bhawal. A grave concern was discussed, where cybercriminals posing as jail officials have been making calls to various lawyers, including Advocate Rameshwar Singh Jamwal, Radha Sharma, Rajeev Sharma, and several others. These imposters request financial assistance for purported medical emergencies of their under-trial clients.

The officers were emphatically urged to initiate immediate measures to curb such cyber scams, which target even the esteemed advocates.  The urgency of the matter was emphasized, as it posed risks to advocates representing such inmates on both personal and professional fronts.

In response to these concerns, the JKHCBAJ proposed an interactive awareness program by cyber experts with the bar members about the dos' and don'ts in such situations. The bar association extended sincere gratitude to Hon'ble Justice Tashi Rabstan for  instructing the convening of this meeting, recognizing the heightened risk to the legal fraternity from such cyber crimes, and instructing for immediate redressal thereof.

The officers present assured that they would take every possible step to investigate the matter and resolve it promptly. They also committed to sharing the contact numbers of jail authorities with the members of J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu and requesting them to first verify the genuineness of the call by contacting these official numbers.

President Vikram Sharma, Sr. Advocate, along with other members including Parvesh Singh Salaria, General Secretary, and Utkarsh Pathania, Treasurer, addressed the issues with the officers during the meeting.
