Rajouri, May 27:
Following an exclusive report highlighting the mushrooming growth of “unethical” journalists across Rajouri district, members of civil society in Sunderbani have demanded strict administrative action against individuals allegedly misusing the identity of journalism for personal gains.
Speaking to The Northlines, a former administrative officer and member of the civil society said there has been a growing menace of self-styled journalists in Sunderbani and adjoining areas.
“Several individuals carrying microphones and displaying media stickers on their vehicles have been frequently visiting government offices despite having little involvement in actual news reporting,” the member said, adding that such self-styled “portal journalists” have become increasingly active in various departments and offices across the region.
The civil society member further alleged that some such individuals had recently attempted to circulate misleading and sensational information capable of disturbing communal harmony in the area.
“Irresponsible reporting and circulation of provocative content could potentially create law-and-order problems and communal tension in the district,” he said, adding that the timely intervention of the district administration and police officials, including senior officers in Rajouri and Nowshera, helped prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, several local residents have urged the authorities to launch a thorough verification drive regarding media identity cards, news portals, ownership details, and the professional credentials of individuals claiming to be journalists.
“Some individuals are using journalism as a cover for other businesses and personal interests,” local residents alleged, demanding a detailed investigation into the functioning, funding sources, and authenticity of such media outlets operating in the region.
Locals as well as members of the journalism fraternity have also stressed that genuine journalism should not be defamed by the actions of a few individuals allegedly involved in blackmailing or misinformation campaigns.
They appealed to the administration to establish stricter verification mechanisms for media organizations and reporters working in the district.
