Every year on 26th July, Indians celebrate Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate one of the finest moments in their military history. But this day is a great tribute to the incredible valour, determination and sacrifice of the brave warriors who protected the sovereignty of their nation in the Kargil war of 1999. Despite the extremely difficult conditions of the war fought in the extremely harsh climate of the Himalayas the Indian Army emerged a winner. Kargil Vijay Diwas is an annual reminder for every Indian about the sacrifices made by numerous military men and women to provide us with freedom and protection. There are several reasons why the Kargil War is such a unique period of Indian military history. In particular, this is related to the fact that enemy’s troops had captured the mountain tops, which led to the difficulty of the military operations. The task of Indian soldiers was to climb the nearly vertical cliffs under the enemy’s fire in extremely harsh weather and with low oxygen pressure. However, their determination and valor helped them recapture all the occupied positions.
The war also produced heroes for whom their bravery serves as an inspiration for generations to come. Many brave individuals who distinguished themselves in the war include, amongst others, Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, amongst others, all of whom had shown remarkable gallantry even in the face of daunting circumstances. While some had charged towards enemy bunkers despite being severely wounded, some continued leading their fellow soldiers until the last breath of their lives. These acts of bravery were not just confined to battlefield heroics but have become living examples of exemplary leadership, patriotism, and dedication to duties.
Another significant aspect of Kargil Vijay Diwas relates to another important realization that the strength of a nation is not just gauged by the power of its army but also by how united and resolute its citizens are as a nation. In fact, during the conflict, the whole nation was behind the valiant soldiers who were fighting to protect its borders. Be it students sending letters of appreciation and encouragement to the soldiers, or citizens supporting the families of the military personnel, the entire nation came together during the conflict.
This conflict was one more occasion to demonstrate professionalism and efficiency of the Indian Armed Forces. The joint efforts of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force helped India achieve victory thanks to efficient planning and strong determination to accomplish the set goals. Military operations like Operation Vijay and Operation Safed Sagar demonstrated the strategic skills and courage of Indians. The experience gained during this conflict brought a lot of improvement in terms of defense readiness, intelligence gathering, border surveillance, infrastructure, and modernization of armed forces, thus improving the national security of the country in the coming years.
It should be noted that Kargil Vijay Diwas is also an occasion to pay tribute to the families of the brave soldiers who made the greatest sacrifice. Every military man who took part in this war had his family who experienced anxiety, uncertainties, and even loss. Their courage should be appreciated and recognized as well because without their contribution and support there would have been no one to defend our borders and protect our country.
The closer India comes to being developed, the clearer the connection between national security and economic development. Stability and peace in the neighboring countries will ensure that India will achieve economic prosperity, innovation, and development. India’s triumph at Kargil restored the people’s faith in their country’s capability to maintain sovereignty and defend its territory. This faith still helps India become more influential in international politics and proves the notion that security and development are closely connected.
Kargil Diwas is an important day for young Indians. Kargil’s heroes taught that success depends on discipline, persistence, cooperation, integrity, and the readiness to achieve goals despite insurmountable difficulties. The values listed above matter in the classroom, workplace, laboratory, business, and other spheres of life as much as in the army. Therefore, young Indians should remember not only those who died at Kargil but also try to do their best for their country.
The importance of Kargil Vijay Diwas is also in terms of its comprehensive idea of patriotism. Patriotism does not always mean service in the military. Educating children, providing medical services to people with love, inventing new things, making investments for growth, and discharging one’s duties as a citizen honestly are some other ways of being a patriot who builds the nation. Whereas the soldiers guard the boundaries of the nation, the citizens build the society protected by these soldiers. Both create a solid foundation of a strong nation.
The monuments dedicated to the martyrs of the Kargil war are now important symbols of the memory and appreciation of their contribution. Each individual name inscribed on those monuments signifies the service done to the nation and lives sacrificed to make sure that millions of lives stay safe. Visiting these monuments, studying the histories of these heroes and passing them on from generation to generation is crucial in remembering our past and being thankful.
India has been steadily improving its defence capabilities through modernisation, indigenous manufacturing, innovation, and construction of infrastructure along borders in the last decade or so. Innovation in surveillance systems, communication devices, and indigenous production of military equipment highlights the long-term resolve of India in maintaining the security of its nation. Lessons and experience drawn from the conflict in Kargil have had an immense influence on the defence policy of the country and helped the country be more prepared for future challenges while maintaining peace and stability.
Ultimately, celebrating Kargil Vijay Diwas means not only remembering the great victory of the nation but renewing the resolve for the values for which the valiant men of our army laid down their lives. Each and every citizen of the country should make it a point to pay tribute to the brave souls of the Indian armed forces through integrity and responsibility in building up the nation. Whenever the flag of our nation waves proudly, we are reminded of the sacrifice made by our brave soldiers who put our nation above all else. Victory at Kargil instils confidence that no matter what the threat, India united and determined will always overcome it.
