New Delhi, Apr 2: The government on Thursday clarified in the Lok Sabha that consumers are not obliged to install pre-paid electricity meters.
Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, responding during Question Hour, rejected claims that the government is forcing consumers to adopt pre-paid meters like private companies.
Addressing concerns about poor farmers who earn daily wages, the Minister said short-term recharge options of five to ten days are available to ease payments.
However, he noted that serial defaulters—those who deliberately avoid paying bills—may be required to switch to pre-paid meters to ensure revenue collection.
Khattar emphasised that power companies operate commercially and must secure revenue to continue supplying electricity to consumers. (Agencies)
