Lt Col Ankit Sharma
When i first wrote about the idea of a Jammu and Kashmir IPL team by 2030, it was more than just a sporting dream, it was a vision to transform the perception of J&K and bring the valley into the global cricketing spotlight. An IPL franchise from the region would not only ignite passion among youth but also open doors to international sports tourism, investment and employment opportunities that the state truly deserves.
With Mithun Manhas emerging as a key figure in Indian Cricket, the dream of Jammu & Kashmir IPL franchise may finally find real traction. His potential rise to the post of BCCI President could serve as a catalyst for long overdue development in the region’s cricketing landscape.

Manhas who has represented Delhi and J&K in domestic cricket and contributed to Indian Cricket in various coaching and managerial roles, brings credibility and a deep understanding of the game’s grassroots ecosystem. His leadership could finally align the cricketing aspirations of J&K with national priroities.
THE CASE FOR A J&K IPL TEAM
The introduction of an IPL franchise from Jammu & Kashmir would carry implications beyond the sport itself. It could:
- Generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities from sports management to tourism and hospitality.
- Bring International cricket to the valley, boosting sports tourism and regional pride.
- Serve as a platform for young Kashmiri talent, who often lack access to elite-level exposure despite possesing raw potential.
- Contribute to the image makeover of the region, positioning J&K as a symbol of integration, peace and progress.
- Inspire youth engagement in sports and create a new Eco system for local talent.
HOW THE GOVERNMENT CAN PITCH IT
The government of Jammu & Kashmir can positively:
- Prepare Infrastructure blueprint for an international standard cricket stadium in the region.
- Engage with the BCCI & IPL governing council to present a compelling case backed by feasibility studies and audience potential.
- Offer policy incentives and public private partnerships to attract sponsors and investors.
- Leverage the UT’s peace and progress narrative to showcase J&K as the next emerging sports destination.
- Establish a Sports Development Task Forceto evaluate logistics, security and financial stability.
- Present a formal proposalto the BCCI highlighting the regions audience potential, growing youth engagement and tourism benefits.
A well crafted pitch could make J&K a serious contender the next time IPL expansion is discussed.
THE BENEFITS ARE ENORMOUS
A J& K IPL team colud:
- Inspire youth engagement and sports development at the grass root level.
- Create jobs and local business opportunities in tourism, hospitality, media and logistics.
- Promote national integration and pride showing that J&K stands shoulder to shoulder with the rest of India.
- Transform global perception, projecting the region as a land of talent, peace and potential.
A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
This is not just about cricket, its about hope, image and identity. If we can’t make it happen now, with our very own Mithun Manhas potentially in a leadership role at the BCCI, we may lose a golden chance to script history. The coming years are pivotal. As the India’s cricket economy expands, new franchises are expected to join the IPL fold. If Jammu & Kashmir can present a convincing case backed by infrastructure, safety and sponsorship readiness, there is no reason why the Jammu & Kashmir cannot host its own team by 2030.
I appeal to Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister to take proactive steps, form a dedicated Sports Vision Task Force and initiate dialogue with the BCCI. Lets bring this dream to life.
Jammu & Kashmir deserves good things and this would be the brightest of them all.
