New Delhi, December 3: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday highlighted the importance of empathy, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities (PwDs) (Divyangjan), asserting that their empowerment is a collective responsibility of both society and the government. Speaking at the National Awards ceremony honoring individuals and organizations working for the welfare of Divyangjan, President Murmu called for a change in societal attitudes toward people with disabilities.

“They need empathy, not sympathy. They deserve natural affection, not special attention. Above all, they should experience respect,” President Murmu emphasized, urging society to foster an environment where Divyangjan are treated with dignity and equality. She stressed that being differently abled is not a limitation, but rather a “special condition” that requires tailored support, including special training, counseling, and accessible facilities.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts in prioritizing the welfare of Divyangjan, the President called on society to step up and ensure their inclusion. She highlighted the remarkable progress made by Divyangjan in various fields, especially sports. “In the 2012 Paralympics, India secured just one medal. However, in 2024, our athletes won 29 medals. This progress reflects our growing sensitivity and commitment to their empowerment,” she said.

President Murmu further emphasized the need for creating an inclusive environment where accessibility is seamlessly integrated into public and private spaces. “Ease of living for Divyangjan is a crucial metric of societal progress,” she remarked. “A truly sensitive society ensures equal opportunities and seamless access for everyone.” She referred to the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign) as a key government initiative aimed at improving accessibility for Divyangjan, calling for continued efforts across ministries to advance their social and economic empowerment.

The President also noted the expanded recognition of disabilities, which now includes 21 categories, compared to only three previously. She urged special efforts to reach Divyangjan in rural and remote areas, ensuring that the benefits of these initiatives are extended to all.

During the ceremony, 33 individuals, institutions, and organizations that have made significant contributions to the empowerment of persons with disabilities were honored with National Awards.
