New Delhi; Members of the opposition INDI alliance staged a walkout in Parliament on Tuesday during the ongoing winter session to protest against the Adani bribe case. The walkout was part of their ongoing protest against the Modi government’s policies and the allegations surrounding the Adani Group. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor addressed the media during the protest, explaining that it was a demonstration of the strong opposition to the ruling party’s policies. “While we are going to cooperate in the House today, we felt the need to fire one salvo before we leave the protest,” Tharoor said. He emphasized that this walkout marked the end of their six-day protest in Parliament.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram further pressed for an investigation into the allegations, stating that while the allegations were made in another country, they pertain to actions that occurred in India. “It’s incumbent upon us to verify the veracity of those allegations,” Chidambaram asserted, adding that an investigation is crucial to determine whether the claims are true or false, given the potential far-reaching consequences. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not join the INDI alliance’s protest. TMC MP Samik Bhattacharya criticized the alliance, stating that it was disjointed, with parties like TMC and AAP frequently absent. Bhattacharya also pointed to Congress’ diminishing public support, claiming, “Wherever Congress goes, the public rejects them.” He further mentioned that TMC leader Mamata Banerjee had proposed Mallikarjun Kharge as the face of the alliance for the Prime Minister’s position, but now Kharge’s call to action did not include TMC. He called the current situation a “drama” and accused the opposition of undermining parliamentary decorum.
This walkout and the subsequent statements reflect growing tensions within the opposition as they continue to challenge the Modi government’s policies, particularly in light of the ongoing investigations into the Adani Group.
