Indian boxing superstar Nikhat Zareen has her sights set on Olympic gold when she makes her highly-anticipated debut in the 50kg category at the upcoming Paris Games. The two-time World Champion from Telangana carries the weight of expectations as she embarks on the biggest stage of her illustrious career so far.
Zareen has enjoyed a breakthrough couple of years, capturing gold at the 2022 World Championships before adding Commonwealth glory to her resume. She defended her World title earlier this year in impressive fashion. However, standing between the Indian and top honors in France are a collection of dangerous challengers from across the globe.
Chief among her rivals will be Turkey’s Busenaz Cakiroglu, the Tokyo 2020 silver medalist who Zareen knows well from previous battles. Their styles were on display in a close sparring session prior to the Olympics as the Indian scouted her longtime friend and opponent. More recently, Cakiroglu cemented her status as a force after claiming a third European crown.
Another tough test awaits in the form of Thailand’s Chuthamat Raksat, the boxer who denied Zareen gold at the Asian Games last year. Their competitve matches have gone the distance in the past. Determined to avenge that loss, Zareen will need to solve Raksat’s tactical approach.
Reigning Asian and World Champion Wu Yu of China is a battle-hardened foe. The powerful 28-year-old defeated Raksat to take Asian Games gold and will be a stern exam for any boxer.
With a target on her back as the one to beat, Zareen’s road to a coveted Olympic medal in Paris promises to be her toughest challenge yet. However, the Indian boxer’s resume suggests she is more than capable of rising to the occasion on sport’s biggest stage.
