Alarming reports have emerged regarding significant environmental degradation within the forested regions of Pouni Range, encompassing the green valley commonly known as the “Gold Valley.”

According to sources, substantial damage has been done to these pristine forests, with allegations pointing towards the involvement of local authorities.

Sources alleged that the block officer responsible for the Pouni area, particularly in the villages of Sudeen and Kothian, may be complicit in these activities.

“Concerns were initially raised regarding the construction of roads in forest areas without proper compensation or environmental clearance, resulting in millions of rupees worth of damage,” said sources, adding that despite a formal inquiry, it appeared that the block officer had preemptively submitted a report three months ago, potentially obfuscating the true extent of the destruction.

Sources maintained that the locals are now raising their voices, questioning how such extensive damage could go unnoticed or unaddressed.

“Responsibility for the oversight of these regions falls on the District Forest Officer (DFO) of Reasi and the Range Officer of Pouni,” said sources, adding that however, it is alleged that the block officer has misled senior officials, exerting pressure on daily wage workers and guards to downplay or conceal the damage.

Sources asserted that the situation is further complicated by the close relationship between the block officer and a local contractor, both residing in the same village.

“This proximity has purportedly led to a conflict of interest, impeding proper action against the violations. The block officer’s actions—or lack thereof—are now under scrutiny, with locals calling for an investigation into his conduct,” said sources.

Locals have requested the Principal Secretary and Chief Principal Secretary Forests to take immediate action against those responsible for the destruction of the forests.

“Reports suggest that similar environmental degradation has occurred in other nearby panchayats, including Barak and Kothi, yet no significant measures have been taken to address these issues,” sources maintained.

Talking to Northlines, a senior forest officer admitted, “We are unaware of the full extent of the situation, but immediate action will be taken wherever there is evidence of forest destruction.”

The officer also emphasized the need for the general public and daily wage workers to report any further instances of environmental damage directly.
