Srinagar, Jul 22: A police head constable was martyred after terrorists opened fire on him in Anantnag town of south Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.
The attack took place around 12.30 pm at Lal Chowk in Anantnag, where Head Constable Ashiq Hussain was deployed on Amarnath Yatra security duty.
Hussain sustained critical injuries in the firing and was immediately shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Anantnag. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a massive search operation to trace the assailants involved in the incident.
Officials said investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Meanwhile, The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack through a social media post.
The incident comes amid heightened security arrangements across Jammu and Kashmir due to the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. (Agencies)
