A Delhi resident was left surprised after paying a hefty Rs. 50,000 fee to a chartered accountant (CA) for an Income Tax notice, only to find that the disputed amount was a measly Re. 1. In a social media post that garnered attention, Apoorv Jain shared his frustration at the incident saying he was “not joking” about the massive fee paid for such a small tax dispute.
As per details shared online, Jain had received an Income Tax notice recently and hired a CA to handle the matter. However, upon resolution of the dispute, it turned out the final disputed sum was just Re. 1. While CA fees can vary depending on the work involved, many felt the Rs. 50,000 charged in this case seemed disproportionately high given the minuscule amount under scrutiny.
The unexpected revelation kicked off a debate, with some expressing shock over the fee and questioning if a simpler resolution could have been found without a CA’s involvement for such a trivial sum. Others criticized Jain for agreeing to pay such a substantial amount without ascertaining details of the dispute upfront. One user pointed out the lack of clarity around why Jain did not get key information like the disputed amount disclosed initially to assess proportional professional charges.
While tax notices can cause stress, this case highlights the need for taxpayers to be well informed and ask pertinent questions before agreeing to high service fees, especially when dispute amounts are minor. For Jain, it may be a lesson to take greater care in fee negotiations to avoid any jokes being had at his expense in similar situations going forward.
